Brenda's "Use Those Scraps" Challenge

Post  BrendaB on Fri Apr 30, 2010 5:21 am

If you're like me, you have a basket of pp and cardstock scraps left over from projects, but sometimes those scraps get pretty neglected. Here are a few ideas on how to use those scraps on pages/cards. The challenge is to use at least one of these ideas and make either one scrapbook page or two cards.

Strips
1) cut your scraps into strips of varying lengths and widths and use them on your page as a border or behind your photos instead of a photo mat. Use your border punches on some of the strips if you want.
2) weave strips together to make a background piece for embellishments, or die cut images from a woven piece
3) fold a small strip into a loop with the ends meeting in the center back, fold another small strip in half to make the tail and adhere behind the loop to make a paper bow. Add a button or brad t the front center as an embellishment
4) instead of ribbon loops, fold paper strips in half and tuck behind a photo or embellishment

Circles
1) punch several different sizes of circles (or diecut or hand cut them) and layer the circles together to make a flower. You can ink and crumple the circles first for more dimension - then add a gem, button or brad center
2) punch or cut several same size circles to use as embellishments or borders, BUT don't stop there....add rubons, stamping, eyelets, brads, buttons, or charms to the circles to make an eye-catching accent
3) use circles behind some of the smaller Primas or other flowrs to help them stand out
4) cut circles in half and use them along a photo or border to make your own scalloped edge

Squares
1) create a quilted look to your page by cutting 3x3 or larger squares to make your background. Add real or faux stitching, or try cutting the edges with pinking shears or a zigzag blade for a real casual look.
2) cut or punch a square, then cut it in half to make photo corners
3) smaller squares make a nice border on a page, or use two or three rows of small squares across the center of your page behind your photos. Random lines of stitching going through the squares make a cool look, too.
4) adhere a square (or rectangle) to your page on three sides to make a pocket for journaling or memorabilia.
5) punch a circle, star, heart or other shape from the center of a square and then place another piece of cardstock or pp underneath it to show through the opening. Adding some penwork around the opening edges is a great touch

Die Cuts
1) use those scraps next time you die cut a flower, alpha or other image. Mix and match pp's to get a random alphabet title or grouping of flowers. You can tie them all together with inking, penwork, or stitching

Sheer randomness
1) sometimes I just go through my scrap basket and pull out papers that coordinate. Then I lay a piece of white or kraft cardstock on my table and just start laying those scrap pieces down, and moving them around until I get a design I like. Add some pictures and a few embellishments and your page is done! Here's a page I did this way:

There will be a RAK for a random winner of this challenge! flower

Awesome ideas, Brenda. I am going to copy this list to save as a reference that I can add to to help with the smaller scraps that continually add up for me.

This one is definitely doable! Can we combine a couple ideas like strips and circles? Or just one?

I pulled out some patterned paper strips and used a diecut paper for the background and here's what I came up with.

I used strips for a photo mat and for the title and to display embellies. I used squares for the alpha of the title. What a ton of fun this challenge was for me.

I am very bad about using my scraps even though I have a whole bin full of scraps. I am really going to have to do this challenge.

Jill - I love your bus stop layout. It is very pretty and bright in color. This layout doesn't even look like you really used scraps. I love the light pink and green papers and colors together.

Linda - It looks like the guys loved their ice fishing, and I love the colors of your layout and the journaling around the circle with the FISH blocks in the corner.

Brenda - I love your layout and the use of scraps on a blank sheet of paper in one section of the page. Very pretty and elegant.

Deanna - I like how you created this Precious layout with your scraps.

Karen - The scrap strips are a very creative way to provide some more color on the background of your layout.
